squid is mainly used as a proxy server. it is not specific to redhat and
can run on almost all distributions.

proxy server is a software which is used in multi-user environments to
provide internet connectivity to those machines which are not directly
connected to the internet.
thus if yu're in an office with 15 machines, and net connection is
available on only one machine (which can be either dialup, dsl, cable
etc.), and yu need to provide net access to other machines too, you'll
simply setup squid on the machine directly connected to the net.
then for the clients, you'll specify the proxy server address and the
port (Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies :: in mozilla)

this way, yu can restrict access to certain clients, manage your
bandwidth, do caching to store frequently accessed pages. to know more
