squid is mainly used as a proxy server. it is not specific to redhat and can run on almost all distributions.
proxy server is a software which is used in multi-user environments to provide internet connectivity to those machines which are not directly connected to the internet. thus if yu're in an office with 15 machines, and net connection is available on only one machine (which can be either dialup, dsl, cable etc.), and yu need to provide net access to other machines too, you'll simply setup squid on the machine directly connected to the net. then for the clients, you'll specify the proxy server address and the port (Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies :: in mozilla) this way, yu can restrict access to certain clients, manage your bandwidth, do caching to store frequently accessed pages. to know more about squid, visit - http://www.squid-cache.org/ vivek -- \|||/ (o o) --------------------------------ooO-----(_)-Ooo- | vivek | GPG Key: | | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://exain.net/vike | |------------------------------------------------| | Registered Linux User: #305493 | ------------------------------------------------ ( _ ) _| | | |_ (___| |___) Kapil Sharma wrote: > Dear All > > I'm new to Red Hat.Can u guys plz elaborate as what is this squid about. > > > thanks n regards > Kapil Sharma > H/P 00-6-0125678120 ================================================ To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in subject header.
