Try 'knoppix xmodule=vesa' as the boot option (minus the quotes ' '). Most video cards work with this at a max resolution of 800 x 600.

I also faced it yesterday. It said Sync. Out of Range. I booted Knoppix in
`expert' mode and gave the Horizontal and Vertical frequencies manually.
May be you can try the same (keep your monitor manual handy).
