I definitely remember my old machine with Pentium-100 Mhz, 16mb RAM running an older linux (prob. Redhat6.0) including x-windows. It even ran properly after a RAM failure reduced it to 8mb RAM. maybe you should look at the installation options (expert install, lower RAM, another kernel from the list) of your RH7.3 (and do textmode install).
