Is there anyone else on this list who uses Gentoo Linux ? I have tried many distributions over 4 years - from redhat 6.2 > redhat 7.0 beta > mandrake 7 > redhat 7 > debian potato stable > slackware SuSE 8 > mandrake 8 > debian unstable > gentoo 1.0 > mandrake 8 > gentoo 1.2 . Gentoo's an excellent distribution for a developer or someone wanting to really learn Linux rather than a few rpm command switches (and i'm not even talking about drakx and yast2) ;) . It's also extremely fast on legacy hardware as it can be compiled optimised for the architecture it's actually going to run on rather than the lowest-common-denominator. Don't want gnome support ? you got it. Don't use a PDA and never will ? Support won't be built in. Need optional wireless support for certain apps ? Pronto.
With advanced features like config file protection and an extremely responsive, helpful, knowledgeable, and diverse user community, with lightning fast bugzilla turnover times and that great feeling of me being *in control* rather than the software, I truly feel that this distribution's time has come. If there's anyone in Delhi who needs Gentoo help or any other Linux help for that matter, feel free to contact me. -- Aniruddha Shankar Bangalore, India Vipassana works : http://www.dhamma.org
