I take it you have a windows box and can't afford to install linux on
it and risk losing your windows install. Perfectly understandable.
Yet you want to get your hands dirty with Linux, well then you should
really look into Cygwin. Cygwin runs on top of your windows
environment and offers almost evertying you'll need to get started with
linux, including a X desktop (Window Maker i think). It requires few
hunder megs of hard drive space (depending on what you install). It is
a great alternative to having a separate linux box. Check it out at
http://www.cygwin.com/ . It is actually a sister company/distro of
red hat.
