Hi, Have been following this thread for quite sometime and seems we should change the name to GNU/Linux Users Group ;-). So, we don't have to promote closed source. The point is, if IBM comes out with a closed proprietary software but if it is so mildly priced, then whats wrong. And why do we try to be moral guardians for others. If you have an open source software equivalent, go for it, who is stopping you. And if Hurd finally does come through, would people suddenly change the list name to Hurd Users Group or probably form another group. There may be many Solaris people too on the list and I don't think its open source. What the heck! If they feel Solaris is better and they discuss it at LUG then would you stop them and say, no it is only about Linux and GNU. Linux is just a kernel, and softwares GNU or proprietary make it what it is. Probably Hurd could replace it tomorrow.
Everyone wants to make money, even IBM, so if they believe that they would have to charge for something and maybe keep the source closed, its their right. Don't buy it, but don't stop discussion on it. And don't shun it because it is closed. Why not build something Open which is better ;0). Somehow I feel, all these companies which are coming together are actually doing so to break M$ monopoly. Nor are they any crusaders for Open Source or anything. At least, we as the end users are better off, we have now choices. And almost everyone , whether at GCC or GNU or all those companies (except probably RMS and a select few) are into this for the money and nothing else. Most will actually go if they have a better opportunity somewhere else (fair enough).
