Dear All, I must disclose my identity in case some of you are wondering. I am tripta, it's that my email id has changed from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The progress of the LAP project which has been quite good. The distribution CD both for the LAP and CBSE is almost ready and we are expecting to finalize it by Thursday. Supreet, pankaj and rathi (@ sarai) along with inputs from prateek and dhruv have developed and compiled the CD. i have certain concerns and issues about the project we are undertaking and i think we all should collectively think, reflect, comment, critique and raise further questions before we proactively start working on it so that our imagination of not only how but also WHY and WHAT of the project are clear from the inception. I want to extend my congratulations to everyone who has been involved in concieving and creating the distribution CD as with this one of the major milestones have been covered. This is the first time, as far as my knwoledge goes, that an initiative of the sort has been undertaken and we all need to realize the responsibilty we have imposed on our selves. By having the CD, there is a strong possibilty that the entire endeavour may just be limited to being `distribution centre or node'. And from what i understand of the aims, objectives and agenda of the project and what has come out in discussions with other members is that we don't want to be limited to that. The project is not only about `using different softwares' but creating `different attitudes about using software'. And this can be internalized within the ethos and imagination of the project only when we can set up a system which is not limited to having one-time-installations at different schools. An association with every school has to be thought in long term instead of a one time installation thing. For every new school in which an entry is made two volunteers have to make a commitment to coordinate the workshops with the technical adminstrators and also with the students interested in programming. The volunteers assume the roles of team leaders of that specific group and help conduct coding workshops. Once a level of technical expertise is met with we can think of possible collaborations between technical and non-technical people involved creating projects around an issue or an idea. Where the technical and the non technical people come together exchange ideas, work on together, help translate and give form to each others ideas. The imagination of the entire project may seem quite ambitious but it is only with having certain ideas. The developements at `Presentation Convent' where the LTSP server which has been set up Leo in the mid level lab can be seen as the pilot project. Because the lab supports classes from 4th - 8th after discussions with dhruv and supreet who have visited the schools, the idea of having programming workshops with the students seems a too ambitious. But we were thinking of workshops with the teachers involved who have shown interest in the entire endeavour. At this moment the issue which needs to be addressed is having a stable group of vlounteers who commit and take on the responsibilty. If the linux support is unstable and takes the shape of a service industry, the entire project will loose its grounding and fall flat on its face. Please comment. This will be also one of the agendas of the next meet details of which will be soon posted.
