Check out the /etc/syslog.conf file and you will see a few lines , wherever /dev/console is written just replace it with a filename and the system messages will not be displayed on the screen. All logs in linux are stored in /var/log/ so though it does not matter ,it would be advisable to give the target file in this directory.
