The Internet seems to be a free place, and yet this isnt true. The name
servers that control our experience of the Internet are controlled by
ICANN, and now the US govt wants more control of it
(http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-934848.html). Would'nt it be possible
to set up and manage our own set of DNS server with provisions for a
set of names that we want to serve rather than the ones that ICANN
decides? The DNS servers that we set up will also be able to route
transparently to existing domains(the ICANN ones). Maybe Iam ignorant,
but this seems like a good idea to me, a little disruptive of the
authority of teh ICANN, but then what the heck, it goes with teh spirit
of a good time, a good solution and might even save us some of the
money we guys pay the domain registrars. What we need is a high speed
line with failover, a couple of high availability linux servers with IP
failovers and we are ready to go. May be it is a good project for many
of us networkers out here in Delhi. Any ideas?
