Though this is genuinely the case, we actually can do this, especially if linux is not configured properly. The only way to circumvent it is to change the configuration so that single is disabled, (how is that done, anyway?). On PCs, there is very little need in terms of security, except that we should be able to ward off virus attacks. This option is a boot option, so it is impossible for any virus writer to use this feature. This is a wonderful way for PCs, though it is still a serious threat to System Administrators, as they have to be aware, which many aren't. This option may not be available on a server install, I am not sure.
