You basically need to do the following.
The combination I used was Qmail- Courier-imap + LDAP
Store the entries in LDAP, and create virtual email users. These users are not linux users, they only have their mail stores on the linux server.
Both courier-imap and qmail can be configured to access user information from the LDAP entries..

Is there any maximum no. which can be used as the uid of users on a linux
(kernel 2.2.x) OS installation. if there is what can I do to create a few
lakh users for the purpose of providing free webmail to the users. I would
like to use LDAP server for authentication and not /etc/passwd.
