After booting single, do a "mount" and see what the mount parameters for your /var partition is? Why is it being flagged as readonly??
Also, if nothing else works, try doing this: - Check the ram you had just installed, by taking them out one at a time and rebooting - If you have installed a new card, try taking it out and rebooting to find out whther any h/w conflicts could be causing a problem... - Sandip On Fri, Jan 25, 2002 at 11:25:06AM +0530, Robins Tharakan spoke out thus: > hi , > > i'll get down to the matter straight. > > i have this old p-120. > the problem started when a loose lan card came off. i open the machine, after > a hard shutdown, fixed the card, increased ram from 16M to 32M. > > now the boot up gave > "grep /proc/cmdline: no such file or directory.." > /etc/rc.d/rc : /var/run/runlevel.dir (read-only filesystem) > init : ID 1 , respawning too fast, disabled for 5 minutes... > and the same message for runlevels 2,3,4,5,6 > > i thought maybe the boot image got corrupted (and /proc filesystem wasnt > being mounted properly...) > > next, i booted from a boot floppy... > still got same error. > > then i did a "linux single".. > came to a prompt and just to note, it gave > "Mounting /proc filesystem: [OK]" > so atleast that was(seemingly) not the problem ... > > i do a "init 3" from there... > and what i get is the same message repeated... > > /etc/rc.d/rc : /var/run/runlevel.dir (read-only filesystem) > init : Id 1, respawning too fast, disabled for 5 minutes... > and the same message for runlevels 2,3,4,5,6 > > one word... > > ""help"" ! > > tia, anyways > affly > robins > > _________________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com > > ================================================ > To subscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with subscribe in subject header > To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in subject >header > Archives are available at http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd%40wpaa.org > ================================================= -- Sandip Bhattacharya sandipb @ bigfoot.com http://www.sandipb.net ---------------------------- ================================================ To subscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with subscribe in subject header To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in subject header Archives are available at http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd%40wpaa.org =================================================
