+1 for Linux Mint. I would recommend Mint 13 KDE which is LTS (Long
time support) release, so is supported for sometime.

Regarding your printer - search http://home.windstream.net/joelwest/
here with your printer name and filter results by Ubuntu / Mint if you
face any issues in connecting.

For handling file shares through GUI install "system-config-samba".
