there are different aspects in  what you said ,

1) market forces : market will decide on what will survive free or
proprietory
2) development methodology : open source the emphasis is  more on the
development methodology and packaging, Freedom is not emphasised much and
the advocates try to avoid the term. since the whole point of starting of
this was to not to confuse the word free with free beer.
3) philosphy : free software is a movement social/political one where the
free as in freedom is important.

most of what you hear the noise and fanaticism is about the third where
people needed to be educated .
