It is not a bloat.

What's the fun in it? Open source means contribution irrespective of how 
you can.

There is cost involved in whatever you start. Running these mailing 
lists cost but someone is paying for this right. Even getting education 
costs.

Everyone has different pathway to get to wherever they want to go. I 
liked the article but I don't understand how is it related to Ubuntu and 
PCs. Hasgeek guys are great. If it is community (we) but was started by 
one guy (I). I hope you get my point.
