Dear friends, Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association (TNPWAA) is celebrating the centenary year of Indian cinema by organising a movie journey that spans the whole of Tamil Nadu. They have also planned screenings in South Chennai and Free Software Foundation, Tamil Nadu (FSFTN) is joining them for a movie screening! Therefore as a part of the movie journey, FSFTN and TNPWAA are organising the screening of “Capitalism: A Love Story” (2009), a documentary movie by the renowned director, Michael Moore, that takes a “people's perspective” in understanding the global financial crisis of 2008. An excerpt from the IMDB is given below (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232207/): “Capitalism: A Love Story” examines the impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world). The film moves from Middle America, to the halls of power in Washington, to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan. With both humor and outrage, the film explores the question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore goes into the homes of ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down; and he goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere. What he finds are the all-too-familiar symptoms of a love affair gone astray: lies, abuse, betrayal...and 14,000 jobs being lost every day. “Capitalism: A Love Story” also presents what a more hopeful future could look like. The movie gives us a good grounding for discussing the bad effects of corporate control of knowledge often leading to compromising the freedom of an individual. FSFTN is also planning a discussion on these issues after the movie screening. In this session, we would also have a discussion on “All India Conference for abolishing Commercialisation of Education and Building a Common School System” which is to be held from 30th June to 1st July 2012 at Valluvarkottam, Chennai. Date: 24 June 2012, Sunday Time: 10.30 AM Venue: TNPWAA Office Hall, Near SRP Tools, Tharamani (the location is near Thiruvanmiyur MRTS Station and is on the Vikram Sarabhai Street). We look forward to your participation in the movie screening and the discussion thereafter. For more details, contact: Sibi K.
