It is normal to see the scrolling text. Only in the last 5 years, they 
have added the splash image. Personally, I prefer the text to make sure 
all services have started up okay.

If you are up for some experimentation, you can try to set the value to,

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset quiet"

and see what happens. Without a splash image, I don't know what you will 
see on boot up.
