My humble suggestion is not to go with google. The billing system is
painful from my past experience since you cannot renew your domain
registration until the last moment. On failing to renew on time, the
domain goes into the vault which can cost you more to unlock. On failing
to unlock, it goes into the public domain after a few months.

The thread is a little old but it was valid on Sep 2010 and I think, it
is valid even now.

"If you do not renew domain registration within the 19-day window of
opportunity, your domain name will be 'vaulted' by the registrar company
(GoDaddy.com or eNom.com). A 'vaulted' domain name is not publicly
available for registration, nor can it be redeemed without additional
charges.

To recover a 'vaulted' domain, you must contact the registrar company to
re-obtain the domain at an additional fee of $89 for GoDaddy.com and
$160 for eNom.com. You can find contact information for Godaddy.com or
eNom.com in the Advanced DNS settings section of the control panel."

Once you get a domain, you can still register with Google Apps for
getting the services.
