Use data cable. Connect it to the PC/laptop. Unless you have utility like `powertop` running and have suspended your USB ports, it should just mount the drive and also pop up an dialog asking what you want to do with the mounted device.
With `usb suspended` using powertop it takes a while for the camera or any usb device to get detected due to poll frequency. in such cases USB is not always on.
