problem solved - cups not installed. 15 has a choice of desktop,
developer or webserver for installation. I chose developer not realising
that in its zeal to prevent global warming, Redhat does not encourage
developers to use printers. Apparently developers are not expected to
use office or most of the system-config utilities also. Thanks guys for
your help. (did someone say that this list is unfriendly?)
