The flag you have to pass to `adduser` is `--force-badname`. For
example:
sudo adduser cow.goat --force-badname
Worked for me on Ubuntu 11.04. Unfortunately, I'm not really aware of
the consequences of doing this. You're probably better off choosing a
different username.
