By inference, then UNIX system programmers using emacs do not know UNIX :D Please let us not go down this road. I started using vi in 1984 and it did take me a while getting proficient at it. It was the only curses based text editor on the system I was working on; the alternative was ed. IMO, the learning curve applies to any software application. The OP can choose to learn vi/vim or continue using the editors that he is familiar with. Use the editor that helps you get your job done.
