First of all - always post the version number of your application.
What version of openldap have you installed?

I read through the links you have posted and also the comment section.
 Notice that others who have tried to follow the article have
experienced problems.

Although I have seen posts of  slapd.conf  being deprecated, I believe
the file can still be used to start your server.

I would suggest that you read the openLDAP documentation here
<http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin24/quickstart.html>  see point no. 8
which clearly mentions slapd.conf
