The proper and most gracious way to respond to someone who corrects your mistake is to say 'Sorry, thanks for correcting me !' - *not* trying to cover your mistake under the guise of a different opinion or freedom of expression.
Be humble when being corrected and you'll be respected more than when you try to build a smokescreen to cloud your obvious mistake.
