GMail has several throttles to ensure users don't abuse the system.
If you send out mass emails through GMail, your account is bound to
get locked. I suggest that you do not use GMail without knowing its
limits.
To the OP: try Thunderbird's Mail Tweaks extension. It's got a
Personalized Email feature which can mass mail and is easy enough
for end users to use.
