if yum is not working you are in deep trouble anyway - why is yum not working? 
that must be solved first. you must try and repair yum - if it is FUBAR, then 
you may have to consider the (windozy) idea of taking backup and reinstalling. 
A system where stuff is partially installed with yum, partially with standalone 
RPMs and partially with source installs is very difficult to maintain and 
becomes more difficult every day. (I an expert in the confusion this causes as 
in the late 90s and early 2000s when rpms were often broken, out of date most 
of my systems were in this messy state.
