if yum is not working you are in deep trouble anyway - why is yum not working? that must be solved first. you must try and repair yum - if it is FUBAR, then you may have to consider the (windozy) idea of taking backup and reinstalling. A system where stuff is partially installed with yum, partially with standalone RPMs and partially with source installs is very difficult to maintain and becomes more difficult every day.
