Disabling screen saver does just that -- disables the screen saver from showing up. To avoid the monitor from blanking you have to tweak the power management functions of your system.

Depending on the desktop environment you use, you can change it using the appropriate tool. For GNOME it is called 'gnome-power-preferences'

A quick google tells me controlling this is possible also possible using xset (the dpms option):
