hi, before anyone expresses an opinion on a website for the LUG, it is imperative that they sincerely test out the candidate sites - opinions expressed without this are totally worthless as they just waste bandwidth. When the site for hosting the Indian Python conference was proposed, there was a full month of testing, and about 20 people tried out the features, found bugs, asked for enhancements and only chose the site when all this was fulfilled. One person even spent 4 hours at a stretch hammering the site from all angles and was instrumental in getting the site fully functional to the satisfaction of all concerned. Based on the discussions here and in the LUG meet, the following criteria are essential;
1. Does the site support registration and login for members. 2.Is it easy for members to post reports, events, CD for grabs and other features? 3. Are there essential features that can only be done by authorised admins? 4. Can spammers be quickly identified and banned? 5. Is the source code of the site available? 6. Is the site under version control? 7. Are members welcome to contribute code, design for the site? 8. How quickly does the maintainer respond to bug reports and requests for features? 9. Is the site available in Tamil? 10. Where is the site hosted and how stable is the hosting? 11. Are new features thoroughly tested before being put in production? 12. Is there a publicly available bug/feature request tracking system 13. In cases of sites that are managed through a CMS, is there a publicly available log of all changes and customisation that can be used to rebuild the site? 14. And most important: does the maintainer have an ego and how big is it? The bigger the better because he will always be worried about complaints and will fix problems immediatly. If he has no ego, he will just give excuses and take months or years to respond to complaints. -- regards kg http://lawgon.livejournal.com _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, email ilugc-requ...@ae.iitm.ac.in with "unsubscribe <password> <address>" in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
