how do you define who wins? A LUG is not a democracy, the vast majority of list members do not vote at all. Last time a poll was held, the person holding it insisted that at least 5% of the mailing list members should vote or else the poll would be invalid. He calculated that 5% meant at least 70 members voting. Actually after a lot of campaigning we got 67 people to vote. Since the majority was 74 to 6, the poll was accepted. We also ensured that only mailing list members were allowed to vote - how that is being done here I do not know. Maybe some one can explain?

I guess a majority counts as a win? The web-based poll has the advantage of anonymity - so people can vote without worrying about irking friends. But I guess that also means the validity of results can also be doubted - but I'm not all that surprised to see that 250 people have voted. There are thousands of members, right? The last poll was ages ago. I'm sure a few hundred new students joined since then?

Anyways, if the validity is in question, I think the foolproof way to do it is on the list and count them manually. That way we know for sure they're members. If anybody has a better idea, shoot.

Vamsee.
