My experience with H264 decoding on Linux using hardware acceleration has been pretty bad. But I came across this and it sounds interesting. You have probably seen this already: http://blog.mymediasystem.net/avchd/nvidias-vdpau-driver-version-18016-hardware-acceleration-for-hd-content-h264-with-major-improvements/ There have been some attempts to get CoreAvc running under linux, but I am not sure how successful the attempts were at getting hardware acceleration going.
