I use my laptop with whatever LAN connection is available. At home I have a bsnl broadband modem with several ethernet ports - I plug in the ethernet cable to my laptop - laptop is set to get IP and other info from DHCP, and it works out of the box. In the office LAN, this was working out of the box previously. Now ethernet gets detected, but there is no default route - I have to manually add the default route to the gateway.
