My setup is pretty much the same, minimal startup applications and a lightweight WM, fluxbox, which does exactly what one expects from a WM, just manage the fscking windows and leave the user alone. My daemons array is: DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network @crond @sshd @alsa @dbus @hal @fam @xinetd) I did use slim, but then moved to XDM, because I wanted to use the fancy finger-swipe login in thinkpads. :-) And fluxbox takes about 2 seconds to kick in, and a minimal xinitrc helps here. Mine is: xscreensaver -no-splash & xset -b xmodmap ~/.xmodmaprc conky -d ischedule -f ~/Docs/mycal.ics -g "+20+800" --fn -xos4-terminus-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-* & And after this, Emacs takes over my life. :) But perhaps the best explanation would be that Arch doesn't assume the user to be dumb. And yes everybody on this list pounced on KG with a holier-than-thou attitude, yes, his cranky replies didn't do the list or anybody any good, but I freely acknowledge that Ubuntu sucks mightily. But he certainly could have done better than friggin' Mandriva. :) Sujith -- http://sujith-m.blogspot.com _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, email ilugc-requ...@ae.iitm.ac.in with "unsubscribe <password> <address>" in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
