Typically, this manifests with bad hardware. Verify by booting, using a LiveCD (e.g. Ubuntu 8.04). I am guessing the kernel is timing out with hard disk access - don't hold me to it :) > any solution. You will have to figure this out by stripping components from the system, use a LiveCD and identify which component is causing the problem. Suggest start with removing the hard disk. In one of my client's system, the RTC clock was flaky, the system would boot but I would get EIP randomly; had to replace the mobo.
