Thanks for sharing your solutions to the list.

In your OP, you had not mentioned that you were running a windows 
domain.  The above certainly helps your case.

err, name servers are in /etc/resolv.conf and not /etc/hosts.  This 
could have an effect if you have DNS for your internal hosts; pointing 
it to the correct name server is very important.

Not an expert on MS-CIFS but it eventually finds allowable shares.
