Good work on setting up samba. 

Strange that your samba shares are slower than windows.  Are you using 
Vista+SP1 or XP+SP2?   I have seen a report that one needs the latest 
samba version for vista+sp1 because M$ introduced some new 
functionality for file sharing methods (sorry don't know the details).

You may have to do some performance tweaking.  

Personally, I have not touched samba for > 1 year so cannot help you 
with specifics.

I suggest you search through the SAMBA FAQs and mail list archives 
(www.samba.org), I am sure others have experienced the same and got 
their solutions there.
