Thanks. Basically, even though the students are interested, they are
handicapped because of lack of basic skills required for a foss project.
Some example i can quote are:
* Lack of knowledge of SVN. (its one of basic operations in any FOSS
project)
* Lack of knowledge of IRC
* Lack of knowledge of Colloboration softwares. (like wiki, Project
Management etc)
Students are not able to use these things because they are not aware of
these things, which happens because they do not have an opportunity or
requirement to use them. On one side I agree IRC is the ultimate medium
of communication, especially to seek help, with FOSS community, but for
students IRC can be really addictive and may even become a distraction
from their education. They do not tend to use collaboration softwares
because they have nothing sorta collaboration in their curriculum and
expecting them to come out of their curriculum jail is something that I
don't see happening in near future.
In my personal experience, I found most student's interest to be very
short lived and temporary and it dies out as soon as they get placed in
some foo, bar MNC. Although I knew students within ILUGC itself
contributing more than I have ever tried to, they still are a meager
percentage of the student community (even within ILUGC) and they
themselves were futile in trying to get their pals in.
