If you think the script is buggy then please file a bug report with 
Ubuntu.

I did an online upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 (Night Unlimited Broadband 
plan helps).  Under 7.10 I updated all the packages installed in my 
system.  The update manager has an option to upgrade to 8.10.  Clicking 
on the "upgrade" button will initiate download of relevant packages.  
In my case, the first attempt got botched; the second attempt was 
successful.  My system is now Ubuntu 8.10.
