32nd Joseph R. Duplin Trophy March 26-27, 2011 Tufts University Boathouse Upper Mystic Lake, Medford, MA
Saturday at the Duplin saw the same conditions everyone else saw; WNW 5-20 with big shifts. The sun was out most of the time but temps struggled to hit the predicted 38 degrees. Two round-robins were held using 21 Larks for the seven teams. There were a few minor breakdowns; not bad for the fleets first dip into the recently thawed lake. One breakdown resulted in two re-sails. One protest resulted in DSQ's to both parties. Special thanks to Tufts Will Pelleteri for finish line duty and Tufts alum John Tagliamonte for hearing the protest and redress cases. A special mention also goes out to Tufts former sailing coach Joe Duplin (with help from Greg Dolan) for repairing boats while the team was away on spring break to ready them for the regatta named for him. Sunday was a repeat with even more sun and slightly steadier winds from the West or NW. A third round-robin was held, followed by two re-sails from Saturday, then lunch. After lunch the top three (BC, Tufts, and Brown) sailed a double round-robin, while the bottom four (Charleston, Harvard, South Florida, and MIT) sailed a single round-robin. John Tagliamonte returned to hear one protest at day's end while coaches Matt Cohen and Danny Rabin heard one at lunch. Undergrads Sara Carnahan, Tori Porter, Kathleen Kwasniak, and Paula Grasberger sat in the finish boat and worked on scores. 78 races were sailed in total.
