Saturday:
Competitors were greeted at the US Naval Academy on Saturday with rain and a 10-15 knot northerly breeze which built throughout the day to over 20 knots by mid afternoon. The first round robin and the first half of the second round were completed. Umpires on the water kept the racing clean and only one protest was filed on land and disallowed. LT Ted Huebner and his team of midshipmen did a fantastic job keeping the course square and getting solid races in. Thanks to Jeff Borland, Rob Overton, Rob Rowlings, Herb Larrabee, Barbara Herbig, Jay Mills, Andrew Cole, Justin Law and Val Smith for serving as umpires. Sunnier skies and more solid breeze are predicted for tomorrow's racing, where the top three teams standing at the end will advance to the Team Race Nationals. Sunday: On Sunday the breeze was back but the rain was not, leaving terrific conditions for the conclusion of the Prosser Trophy. Fourteen races were held in a 12-15 knot northwesterly breeze to complete the second round robin and set the table for the final four. After a short lunch break and boat draw, the top four teams headed back out as the breeze began to build to 18-22 for the final four. Georgetown and St. Mary's entered the final round tied for first and assured of qualification for the nationals, while SUNY stood one win ahead of Navy. In the first flight, SUNY beat Georgetown and Navy beat St. Mary's. In the third final four race, St. Mary's had a 2,3,4 going down the run, but SUNY was able to claw back and take the race away, locking up the final spot in the nationals when Georgetown beat Navy in the subsequent race. Navy beat SUNY in the final race of the regatta, and Georgetown knocked off St. Mary's to claim the Captain Prosser Trophy. Brendan Heally and Andrew Campbell joined the umpire team for the day and allowed for full umpiring during the final four round robin. Congratulations to Georgetown, St. Mary's and SUNY Maritime for qualifying to represent MAISA at the 2009 ICSA / APS Team Race Nationals. The scoring grid with RP information is attached.
