St. Mary’s Women’s Intersectional
St. Mary’s College of Maryland
March 21-22, 2009
The Seahawks were very proud to host the twentieth St. Mary's Women's
Intersectional in the new James P. Muldoon River Center at St. Mary's College
of MD
with a full field of eighteen teams. The event was exceptionally competitive
and we were very pleased to welcome three teams from the west coast (PCCSC).
Very tight racing at the top as the Charleston Cougars edged out the Harvard
Crimson and Yale Elis.
As discussed at the ICSA midyear meeting, we experimented with a "limited
rotation" by having A/B divisions for one team share the same boats, thus
rotating half as often. As the breeze did not cooperate this system made no
apparent difference.
Saturday:
A long day to get in only 4 races in each division. Stan "The Man" Hyatt
flew up from Florida and Chris Gaffney came back to their alma mater to share
RC
duties on a very difficult day on the St. Mary's River. Breezes started
from the NE and were painful for most of the day. A very long A division set
finally ended in a nice Southerly, making way for B to end the day in a light
South breeze of 6 knots. Hopefully the front line with the strong NW will
come
in time for tomorrow's racing despite the prediction to come in a touch late
to help us. Good news is that the teams really enjoyed the new facility.
Barbara Herbig and Adrienne Patterson were judging all day while Mattie Farrar
came in for late day glory in the same role.
Sunday:
A very tricky day on the St. Mary's River despite having both breeze and s
unshine. Breezes were unstable and despite tremendous efforts from PROs Chris
Gaffney and Stan "The Man" Hyatt, several races had to be abandoned as they
were unfair due to major shifts. Although the day began and ended with a
southerly, there was just enough west to make sailors crazy! One race
inverted
just after a couple of boats had finished making for some lucky comebacks and
some bummed out leaders. Thanks to Barbara Herbig for serving as Chief Judge
and Mike O'Connor as ICSA representative!
