McMillan Cup competitors were treated to a more docile day of sailing wind-wise but the day was not without its challenges although of a completely different nature, specifically crab traps.. After a nearly 2 hour delay, a 6-10 knot southwesterly filled and 2 races were run.
In the first race, it appeared that the team from SUNY had suffered a bad start and were languishing in bad air. But when they had not made the first weather mark before the remaining teams had finished their first run it was obvious someone would need to swim to resolve their boatspeed problem. Regatta leader Navy won the race with Maine Maritime (who were only 2 points back) right on their heels. For the finale, it seemed certain that these two teams would lock horns. Against an building flood tide, Navy got a decent start mid line while Maine elected to start at the boat. In what appeared to be a rewind of the first race, Maine came off the line terribly slow and sagged into the bad air of those ahead, clearly the victim of a crab trap. They tacked away but continued to fall back while Kings Point, Bates, Navy, Coast Guard and Mass Maritime dug left. Maine was able to shed the trap but only after losing a huge amount of distance to the fleet. KP rounded first followed by Bates then Navy. Navy passed Bates on the run and closed on KP. Up the second beat, Navy was threatening KP's lead when they too managed to snag a pot of their own. Having seen both SUNY and Maine go down the drain, Navy opted to stop the boat and back down which cleared the trap but dropped them back into 7th position but still ahead of Maine. They held these positions to the finish while Coast Guard nipped KP at the finish line when KP botched their final jibe. Protest hearings resulted in a reshuffle of Saturday's results, where Mass Maritime suffering 2 DSQs while St. Mary's was awarded breakdown points after breaking a jib halyard. Final Results: 1. Navy 1,5,2,1,1,7 17 2. Maine Maritime 2,2,1,6,2,8 21 3. St. Mary's 6,3,4,2,5,5, 25 (avg pts race 3, scoring penalty race 5) 4. Coast Guard 5,7,4,5,6,1, 28 5. SUNY 3,4,5,4,8,4 28 6.
