FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jan Harley, Media Pro Int'l, 401-849-0220 INTER-COLLEGIATE SAILING ASSOCIATION NAMES 2006/2007 ICSA ALL-AMERICA SAILING TEAM College of Charleston Wins Fowle Trophy ANNAPOLIS, MD. (June 14, 2007) - The Intercollegiate Sailing Association of North America (ICSA) has announced the members of its 2006/2007 ICSA All-America Sailing Team, along with the College Sailor of the Year, Sportsman of the Year and the winner of the Leonard M. Fowle Memorial Trophy for the all-around best college team. [Adrienne Patterson (Newport Beach, Calif.) was named the 2007 Quantum Female College Sailor of the Year at the conclusion of the ICSA Women's National Championship on May 25.] The ICSA All-American honors are awarded to competitors who demonstrated outstanding performance in competition during the college sailing year (fall and spring seasons) just concluded. A panel of representatives from each of the seven ICSA conferences reviews each sailor's individual results and sailors are named to the team as All-Americans, Women's All-Americans and/or All-American Crews. Their names will be added to the permanent ICSA Hall of Fame display located in the Robert Crown Sailing Center at the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, Md.). College Sailor of the Year - Trevor Moore: It is a high compliment when a younger sibling follows the path that has been cleared by an older brother or sister. And so it is for Dana Moore, older brother of Trevor Moore (Pomfret, Vt.), the 2007 College Sailor of the Year. When the family moved to Naples, Fla. from Scituate, Mass., Trevor followed Dana into sailing. He attended Seacrest Country Day School and made the rounds on the "Opti" circuit - eventually competing in three world championships. A goal of finishing top-five at the Opti Worlds was never realized, and by the time Trevor moved back to the family farm in Vermont to attend Woodstock Union School, he was burnt out. He took a year off from the sport, and when he ventured back it was on a Laser, again following Dana's example, and in 2002 he qualified for the national championships in which he finished seventh. The decision to attend Hobart College (Geneva, N.Y.) was well thought out - it was close enough [and far enough] from Vermont for his Dad to visit, had great academics, and he could sail. And once he had met with Head Coach Scott Ikle, Trevor set himself the goal of becoming ICSA College Sailor of the Year partly because it was something that had eluded Dana, who was named an ICSA All-American in 1996 and was a nominee for the top honor before graduating from the College of Charleston in 1998. "After four years of hard work, devotion, and persistence, that dream came true," said Trevor. "Sailing is a mental game, and in 18 races sometimes you don't get the break you want, and it can be tough to come back. Looking back at what my team and coach have helped me accomplish...I can't thank them enough." Last fall Moore finished second in the ICSA/Vanguard Men's Singlehanded National Championship, and at the just concluded ICSA National Championships sponsored by PENTAX Imaging Company and Vanguard Sailboats, he helped Hobart place third overall in the ICSA/APS Team Race National Championship and second in A-Division of the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship. Moore, also named an ICSA All-American for the third time, is the first sailor from Hobart to win the College Sailor of the Year award. He was their 2004 Rookie of the Year, MVP for the past two years, and is the only sailor ever to win Hobart's Francis L. "Babe" Kraus Memorial Award for most outstanding senior athlete. Moore, who just graduated, also found time to study - majoring in architecture with a double-minor in environmental studies and geo science. While his original plan was to start a landscape design firm, he has decided that for now he will be sailing the Laser and making the Olympics - most likely in 2012 - his main goal. The award is "another stepping stone for things to come in the future," said Moore. ICSA Sportsman of the Year - John Howell: Maryland native John Howell (Galesville), a St. Mary's College graduating senior, is the recipient of the Robert H. Hobbs Trophy as the ICSA Sportsman of the Year - a fluid progression for the child of parents who met while racing, who learned to sail through the West River Sailing Club junior program and who gave up all other competitive sports in high school and college to pursue sailing. A fellow competitor, in nominating Howell for the award, said: "John exemplifies what it means to respect not only your competitors, but the well-being of the sport of sailing at the collegiate level. I believe that John portrays an excellent portrait of how a collegiate athlete should conduct his character on and off the race course. His ability to sail fairly against his competitors has not only strengthened his play, but the play of others around him." At St. Mary's Howell pursued a degree in Economics, a field he chose because he felt that area was his weakness and that studying it would push him forward. With graduation behind him, he is devoting himself to finding a full-time job, and has eschewed seasonal summer employment in order to do so. He plans to look at a career in sales - a good fit for his personality - or real estate in which he would be carrying on a four-generation family tradition. "What the trophy doesn't show is how much fun I had sailing against everyone else," said Howell. "Clearly it [the award] made me feel great and it means a lot to me. The most significant thing I got out of sailing was friends, and they will be in my life for the rest of my life." Don't be surprised to see Howell out on Chesapeake Bay - he plans to stay put in Maryland and will most likely sail competitively. Although he is not focused on any one class, he hopes to find a boat to race on this summer "a J/22 or some more dinghy racing.anything I can get my hands on." Fowle Memorial Trophy - College of Charleston: The Leonard M. Fowle Memorial Trophy, recognizing the year's best all-around performance in college sailing, has been awarded to the College of Charleston (Charleston, S.C.). The award has been presented since 1972 and is determined by points accumulated at the six major Intercollegiate Sailing Association Championships. Last fall the Cougars had two major victories: at the ICSA/Vanguard Women's Singlehanded Championship freshman Shannon Heausler (Tampa, Fla.) won the 11-race series with 55 points [teammate and fellow freshman Allison Blecher (Fullerton, Calif.) placed second on 61 points]; and after finishing in the top-five in all but two races, including three bullets, the Cougars won the ICSA Sloop National Championship by a 10-point margin. With their win of the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship at the beginning of June, the College of Charleston became the first college in 12 years to successfully defend that title. Moving into the lead on day two of the three-day championship, the Cougars' [senior skipper Russ O'Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) with junior crew Megan Riddle (Vermilion, Ohio) sailing in A-Division, and senior skipper Brendan Healy (Arnold, Md.) with sophomore crew Britney Haas (San Diego, Calif.) in B-Division] tallied 225 points over 36 races (18 in each division) to retain the title by nine points over Dartmouth College. It is the fourth time (1998, 1988, 1986) the College of Charleston has won the Fowle Memorial Trophy. In their 30-year history, they have produced 76 ICSA All-American honorees.
