Hood Trophy, Day 2:
The Upper Mystic Lake was once again host to an extremely successful Hood
Trophy. With the wind
snaking across the water at 10 to 15 knots, we were able to crank out another
3.5 sets today giving each division a total of 14 races. As the competitors
made their way around courses 4 and 5, a lone Monarch butterfly fluttered over
my head, inching its way upwind. Just when it seemed as if the gusts of breeze
were going to triumph and force the insect into a watery grave, the Monarch
would flap harder and gain more ground. I watched for a good 45 minutes,
wondering how such determination was summoned, how such a tiny being could
overcome such great force. Then, I looked out at the 42 sailors surrounding
me, zig-zagging their way to windward, fighting for enough room to get a clean
rounding. One inch in our sport can mean the difference between a perfect,
snake-eyed set and the mediocrity of a mid-fleet finish. And there it was in
front of me the whole time, the explanation: theres no fun in admitting
defeat. We just have to keep fighting one inch, one shift, one ta!
ck at a time.

Hood Trophy Day 1
The autumnal equinox began with steady showers and negligible winds, but in an
homage to C.C.R. the rain stopped and allowed racing to begin around 11:15.
Twenty-one teams packed the starting line for 3.5 sets as the breeze averaged
ten knots from the South-Southwest. By the end of the day, the grey skies had
parted just long enough for the sun to highlight the first sign of Fall
bright green foliage melting into a hypercolor amalgamation of oranges and
reds. What a day.
