I made a beginner’s mistake. In the section “The instance should report its check results to an existing Icinga 2 master” I set the instance name to my2ndwindowsmachine and then I set host to icinga2machine. Changing the instance name to icinga2machine fixed it.

I thought it was a fluke so I moved onto the next machine but I get the same error there too.
