Well, the good news is - very well :) The less good news (from the point of view of understanding this problem) is that I changed hosting providers. Partly based on the bizarre information I was getting about what was happening to the machine, partly based on off-list comments I received, and partly based on some really odd quirks I found about the virtual host, I simply decided to stop wasting time on it and go to another hosting provider who I also have experience with, and who I know provide sensible machines. It was mainly a commercial decision, because this is a project for a customer, it needed to be delivered reasonably on time, and the effort I was putting in to finding out what was going on was far outweighing the costs of the hosting, so I just reinstalled on another machine and cancelled the old one. I'm pretty sure this wasn't an Icinga problem, although it would have been useful to be able to get more diagnostics out of Icinga about what happened when the problem occurred (eg: it's all very well saying "cannot allocate memory", but it would be useful to know how much icinga is currently using, and how much more it's asking to be allocated). Strangely, I still have the identical spec machine from the same hosting provider (which I've had for 9 months now), happily acting as my Master Icinga2 server, and I've never seen this problem on it. The one I was trying to install last week was a satellite of that master, managing service checks on about 16 endpoint hosts (where the master in total manages checks for about 50 machines, 15 of which are directly off the master, with no satellite involved). So, thanks for the assistance, but I chose a completely different solution to the problem :) Antony. -- https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6890 - providing 16 million IPv4 addresses for talking to yourself.
