One thing I’ve noticed is that Icinga1 used to provide formatted date/time
messages (duration: "2 hours 4 minutes”) whereas if I am reading the docs right
for Icinga2 we are only supplied with epoch timestamps or duration in seconds?

Without any specific context it is hard to answer such question. Where do you
expect that string to be shown? Check result output? Icinga Web 2 detail view?
Your own application formatting the time?

Which parts of the documentation did you read?

Did I overlook options to get formatted times?

In terms of runtime macros I’m blindly guessing you mean something like this?
http://docs.icinga.org/latest/en/macrolist.html#macrolist-serviceduration

Are there functions which can be used to return them? How is this approached
with Icing2?

Again, not sure where you want to use/put them. Checks? Notification Emails?

Please provide more details.

Kind regards,
Michael
