Thanks for all who responded here and off-line.
I don't need it for PDSE, only PDS.
Without going through another product like TSO, ISPF, etc, it seems that
you can only get this using two methods:

- read the directory, counting blocks
- use FAMS ($$ doc licensed $$)

Since the information itself only seems to exist in the data set itself,
the first option seems the best to me.
