We’ve used XRC for DR for two decades, the first decade without GDPS (in-house
RYO), much easier after we added GDPS. Some of your 'options' are determined by
hardware. For example, with XRC, your source volumes must be IBM, but the
target volumes can be any flavor. Dell/EMC has their own protocol (SRDF?). I
think Hitachi has yet another one. So start with the options that are available
for your gear unless your mgmt is so hot to trot that they would sweep the
floor to get this going.

Having lived with DR in a suitcase for ages before mirroring, I can verify that
the old Harold Hill technique is strictly last century. 😉

Fred,

Have a look outside the nine dots at what the other vendors are offering.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, and the IBM products and services are
not necessarily the best or most cost-effective way to get the job done.

Fred,

GDPS is not just a product, it is a service sold by IBM. IBM will configure,
set up, and install GDPS to get you up and running, with periodic visits to
ensure that you're up to snuff. Your management needs to brace themselves,
because even the smallest shops are looking at 7+ figures to install GDPS.
I've worked with the teams doing it.
It's an awesome solution for recovery, with a price tag to match.

If your company is a SHARE member, the SHARE GDPS presentations have excellent
overview information. GDPS is based on NetView and SA/390, so you should read
up on them as well. Metro and Global mirror are PPRC and XRC based, so get
familiar with them.

Good luck,
Tom Conley
