I don't remember ever seeing anything about this. We have an old IBM
virtual tape system -- TS3500. I think this is a 3494-B10 and a 3584 ATL.
Anyway, there are times when the system seems to go on a "smoke break" and
stops mounting virtual tapes. Looking at the "Command Queue" the virtual
volumes show "WAITING FOR READY". Sometimes we can clear this up by
cancelling & restarting the job. Sometimes by doing "power cycle" on the
physical backstore tape drive. But someone needs to notice that a job has
been waiting for a long time. We have exactly _ONE_ production scheduler.
She not only does all the scheduling during the day, she monitor the cycle
at night. So she is overworked. At times, the Tech Services "on call"
person will do this because there are a whopping 3 of us.

Anyway, it would be really helpful if there were some way to put up a
"timer" so that when a job is waiting for a mount, after some interval (15
minuts or more), we could get some sort of alert about the mount taking too
long. We do have CA-OPS/MVS release 12.0. The only thing I have come up
with so far is to do periodic DS QL,LIST,QUEUE commands and then use
CA-OPS/MVS to parse the output. I guess this is "OK", but I consider it to
be "crude".

Any thoughts on alternatives (other than actually spending real money which
IS NOT going to happen) would be gratefully received.
