These may be dumb questions but: 1) I'm assuming you connected to the remote application first? Else how could it connect without the IP address somehow? 2) Why isn't the remote application content with the host/domain name (since IP addresses _can_ change)? 3) Why isn't the remote application using DNS (via nslookup or other means) to get the IP address?
